About forty-nine of the churches described in the present volume have been dealt with previously in the little guide-books to Hasle mere, Guildford, and Dorking contributed by me to the Homeland series. Some repetition of substance is, of course, unavoidable; but I have endeavoured, in these cases, to make my present descriptions as fresh and independent as possible. For many of the illustrations in this book (including the reproduction of an old print of Sutton church) I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. G. Clinch.
