Human activities such as the intensive use offossil fuel have been imposing significantperturbations to the atmosphere and air quality onthe global scale. Tropospheric ozone is important asa greenhouse gas, as a precursor for OH, theultimatecleansing agent in the atmosphere, and as a surfaceair pollutant toxic to humans and vegetation.Global change in the coming decades, includingclimate change and changes in anthropogenicemissions can have potentially large effects ontropospheric ozone, on hemispheric transport of airpollution, and on air quality. This book studiesthese effects with a focus on ozone air quality inthe United States. The current generation of globalatmospheric chemistry models are intercompared andthe factors controlling global ozone budgets areexplored. It is demonstrated that the futureclimate change can degrade the U.S. ozone airquality by affecting the air pollution meteorologysuch as temperature and ventilation. The changes inanthropogenic emissions outside of the UnitedStates impose another challenge by enhancing thehemispheric transport of air pollution and hencebackground ozone.
