Postsecondary participation and graduation rates of Black males are declining rapidly signaling dire conjectures related to the economic stability of the family, the incarceration rates of Black men and the global market position of our nation. The limited literature regarding this issue often considers Black males from a deficit perspective rather than exploring the factors that may have helped or hindered their academic progression. By examining the lived experiences of six Black men who completed college programs, this qualitative study explores such factors as well as the academic pipeline that brought them to their degree. The study reveals that personal attributes, social relationships and institutional practice, informed by race and gender, construct experiences of Black males on the path to the baccalaureate.
