The amphibious landing has become one of the most controversial campaigns of World War II. Three months of World War I-style trench warfare was brought on by a series of missteps from the Allied leadership, and the entire beachhead suffered from continuous German observation and bombardment. This book describes the Allies' efforts to reinforce their troops gradually at Anzio, as well as their advancement through Cassino. It also discusses how it serves as an Allied stepping-stone towards Rome and the liberation of Italy.
