This book provides a unique perspective on the dynamics of work, leisure, and class among North Atlantic fishermen by examining the role of fishermen's races within the context of the fishing community and popular culture. The fishing captains and their communities that participated in international racing during the 1920s and 1930s resembled a vessel caught in irons. Like workers in other industries, fishermen succumbed to the inevitable onslaught of technology and mainstream American culture, even as that culture perpetuated their myth.
