Book synopsis
In 1961 and during the decade of its independence from British rule, Guyana was lucky to have Cheddi Berret Jagan as prime minister. Ousted by external agencies and the chicanery of Forbes Burnham, Cheddi then watched as the PNC regime squandered Guyana's resources and sent thousands of Guyanese abroad in hope of a better life. After being in the wilderness for twenty-eight years, Cheddi's triumphant return as president of the young South American country marked a reversion to fairly elected government and sensible economic models. Dr Cheddi Jagan's personal values and broader proposals for a 'New Global Human Order' - as adopted by the UN - his honestly held left-wing views and his fairness to all, together with the Kennedy-Macmillan reaction to his policies and his American-born wife, are faithfully recorded in this sensitive biography by a British friend. It is an affectionate memoir, full of fine detail and humanity, and as such makes a fitting tribute to the father of a nation.
