Popularisiert im späten 19. Jahrhundert von dem deutschen Uhrmacher Matthias Hohner, hat die Mundharmonika die Persönlichkeit, den Sound und die Form amerikanischer Musik in einer Art geformt, wie kaum ein anderes Instrument.Das Instrument wurde zu einem essentiellen Bestandteil des Blues und war vor alle für diejenigen ein Gewinn, die durch ihre Rasse, Klasse oder Geographie am Rande der Gesellschaft standen. Indem das Instrument auf eine Art und Weise gespielt und manipuliert wurde, wie es die Bauer nie vorgesehen hatten, kreierten die Blues Harmonica Spieler einen Ausdruck, der dem der Gitarre, dem anderen zentralen Instrument der Blues Form, sehr ähnelte. Zusammengestellt, produziert und mit Booklet Texten von Barry Lee Pearson und Jeff Place, ist "Classic Harmonica Blues" das 21. Album in der hochgelobten Classic Serie von Smithsonian Folkways.
