Book synopsis
Clevedon, comfortably situated near the River Severn estuary, is a well known seaside town. Near a number of picturesque hills and notable areas of countryside including Court Hill, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Clevedon is an area that has retained a lot of charm and wonderful scenery through its many years in existence. 'Poet's Walk' is a footpath south-west of the seafront, and is dedicated to the abundance of poets and writers that have visited Clevedon, including Tennyson in the early nineteenth century. Clevedon's seaside link predominantly evolved during the Victorian period, and there are many visitor attractions in this area in the Victorian style. Clevedon Pier, for example, was opened in 1869 and is a fine example of a Victorian pier still in use today. A mixture of pebbles, sand and rocky cliffs, the seafront stretches around half a mile from the pier to the notable Salthouse Field, and is home to a number of entertainments including donkey rides, tennis courts, a Victorian bandstand and similar amusements. Local historian Will Musgrave delves into the bustling area's rich history, providing readers with an inspiring collection of old and new photographs that will not only revoke memories of a bygone era, but also show how far the thriving town has come over the years, to settle comfortably as the popular seaside resort it is today.
