Die vom Autor als Open-Source entwickelte PhysBeans-Bibliothek ermöglicht es, ohne Programmierkenntnisse Applets zu konstruieren, um sie als Simulationen in Lehrveranstaltungen einzusetzen. Im ersten Teil von Buch und CD-ROM werden nach einigen grundsätzlichen didaktischen Überlegungen zum Einsatz und zur Gestaltung von Applets über hundert direkt einsetzbare Beispielprogramme aus verschiedenen Gebieten der Physik vorgestellt, jeweils im Kontext konkreter Lehrsituationen. Im zweiten Teil wird gezeigt, wie man mit der PhysBeans-Bibliothek eigene Simulationsprogramme erstellt. Anhand mehrerer, zunehmend komplexerer Beispiele werden alle nötigen Schritte bis zum vollständigen Applet so ausführlich erläutert, dass man sie mit Hilfe der auf der CD enthaltenen Werkzeuge nachvollziehen kann. Die Erweiterung von PhysBeans um eigene Bausteine ist Thema des abschließenden Kapitels, für dessen Verständnis Java-Kenntnisse erforderlich sind.
