These trends make the technological sectors in the industry, more open to cooperation. In some sectors, a single firm cannot sustain the competitive advantage for very long in the highly competitive industry sections without heavy investment in R&D. Such heavy investment taxes the annual turnover of the firms and attempts are always made to reduce it. One of the simplest ways is to share the burden of R&D between firms. The main problem in R&D cooperation between firms is that, if the firms are technologically close enough to cooperate, they are probably also close enough to be competitors!.
