The mechanical response of the basilar membrane in the cochlea plays afundamental role in human hearing. This volume discusses the mainaspects of cochlear compression, including anatomy and physiology; theperceptual consequences of compression in normal hearing; the effectsof hearing loss on compression; and its function in hearing aids andcochlear implants. The role of compression has increasing practicalsignificance as it is incorporated into hearing aids and cochlearimplants to compensate for inadequate compression in people withcochlear hearing loss.
