Book synopsis

What happens when a crew of gung ho and over the top young Army filmmakers wind up in the middle of the "other" war in Vietnam? Readers are calling D.A.S.P.O. "the MASH of the Vietnam War." That's because the Department of the Army Special Photographic Office crews were not supposed to be combat photographers. They hoped to be the next generation of filmmakers, but they found themselves in the you-know-what all too often, They stumbled into the enormity of the drug trade...retrieved babies that were bought and sold...had unspeakable experiences in Saigon Tea Bars...and rescued the Girl With One Green Leg. D.A.S.P.O. troops wore civilian clothes...they lived off base in a Saigon villa with three servants...and their purple diplomatic passports let them travel - and party -- wherever they wanted. But they found themselves in the real war when they stumbled on the secret of the mysterious American "civilians" who lived in the villa next door. Based on the true-life experiences of Lt. Ron Fenster, D.A.S.P.O. is the hilarious story the military never wanted written...a first-hand, first-time glimpse into the role American troops played in pot-laced parties and heroin addiction, the sexual escapades, and the "other" war in Vietnam. As the saying goes, comedy is just tragedy plus time.
