Der französische Publizist und Novellist Jules Amédée Barbey d Aurevilly (1808-1889) liebte die Provokation, trat als Snob und Dandy auf und vertrat dezidiert monarchistische und erzkatholische Position, die ihn namentlich in der republikanischen Zeit nach 1871 zum Außenseiter machten. Die Erzählungssammlung "Die Teuflischen", 1874 unter dem Originaltitel "Les Diaboliques" veröffentlicht, sind glanzvolle Beispiele für die realistische Erzählkunst im Frankreich des späten 19. Jahrhunderts, auch wenn der exzentrische Autor nicht müde wurde, gegen den Realismus in der Kunst zu Felde zu ziehen.
