In July 2000, Thomas Munch-Petersen was on his way to do some work in Leeds. Halfway up the M1, doing 70mph in the fast lane, he leant over to get some mints out of his jacket pocket. For a moment he took his eyes off the road. That moment - 1.96 seconds to be exact - would trigger a catastrophic multiple car crash. Three people died in the pile-up and Munch-Petersen was charged, and convicted, of dangerous driving. A teacher - a proud, professional man - he suddenly found himself on his way to prison.
