Title synopsis
Extending his repertoire for the guitar, Skempton this time introduces it into the realm of a chamber ensemble in the form of five miniatures. By using the lower ranges of the clarinets and strings, the guitar is able to sail above their delicate accompaniments, paying homage to the romance exemplified by a nocturne. The mix of mellow timbres creates a soothing but thoughtful set of pieces. All five pieces are gentle. There is a family resemblance between the first and fourth but the latter is darker and more chromatic. The second (melodic) and third (chordal) form a pair whilst the last is utterly distinct: a disembodied study in natural harmonics. Commissioned by Bath International Guitar Festival (Tom Kerstens) and first performed on 30 July 2000 at the Michael Tippett Centre, Bath, performed by Composers Ensemble/Peter Wiegold/Tom Kerstens.
