Book synopsis

This is a fascinating look at the history and impact of some of New York's most famous holdouts. An empty 9X20-foot site in the middle of Wall Street created by the site's former use as an outhouse. A two-story building surrounded by tall apartments on Upper Broadway that owes its continued existence to the timing of Prohibition. These are the holdouts - buildings that bring redevelopment to a standstill. Holdouts are often considered as David vs. Goliath battles, but is David the little tenant or homeowner who doesn't want to abandon their home to the heartless developer? Or is David the harried builder who has invested huge sums of time and money into creating a development that would be enjoyed by thousands, only to be thwarted by one miserly landowner?
