Book synopsis
In an urban context, architecture and landscape §architecture co-exist in the city. Interior §architecture exists as part of an architectural §envelope, and product design as an integral part of §the interior. This study explores the relationship §between these design disciplines and their §interdependence. As this book deals with interior §architecture, the influence and response to other §fields of design are considered and investigated, §setting the parameters for the design framework. §The objective is to design an information centre for §Pretoria. The tourism industry is studied to serve §as a generator for the design. The site of the Old §Fire Station Building was chosen for both its §potential and its inadequacies. The design §philosophy and approach to create a successful §public space are examined. The progression of the §design from general concept to specific end product §is illustrated. Attention is focused on parts of §the building which is developed in detail. The §study relies on the application of the concepts of §place making through layering, defining and §containing of space, and contrast existing with the §proposed intervention.
