Jakob von Gunten ist der dritte, meistdiskutierte und avantgardistischste Roman Walsers. Er schrieb ihn 1908 in Berlin. Drei Jahre zuvor hatte der Autor eine Dienerschule besucht, deren eigentümliches Milieu er auf das im Roman dargestellte Knabeninstitut Benjamenta übertragen hat. Jakob von Gunten war Robert Walser der liebste unter seinen Romanen. Walter Benjamin nannte dieses Tagebuch eines Internatszöglings »eine ganz ungewöhnliche zarte Geschichte, in der die reine und rege Stimmung des genesenden Lebens liegt«.
