Macedonia and Macedonians struggled to achieve recognition and independence as a nation for almost the entire 20th century (1893-1991). In this regard, the central/pivotal question is who Are the Macedonians? Depending how the question is answered, one can have a multiethnic Macedonia and a "Macedonian Question" - if the Macedonians are descendants of 6th/7th century AD Slav settlers alongside Albanian and other ethnic interlopers [the present world paradigm].
