This volume examines periodic changes in color design in medieval churches during the 19th and 20th century. What thus catches the eye is the alternation of phases that brought forth sacred spaces with reduced color and even visible stone and such spaces that strove for colorfulness. The ideologies that stand behind this process are analyzed by considering exemplary restoration measures in individual church buildings against the backdrop of the respective self-conception of monument maintenance, but also more general societal notions. It is shown how much artistic design is inherent in the practice of preserving.
