Nanoelectronics: Physics, Materials and Devices addresses the concepts involved in exploration of current research on nanoscale electronics and photonic devices, and their application in next-generation integrated circuits (ICs). The book covers a broad spectrum, from basic concepts to current research topics. It presents a detailed discussion in the field of nanoscale electronic and photonic devices, as well as some of the most recent techniques for modeling and simulation of these devices. The book provides an in-depth analysis of theoretical framework, fundamental physics underlying device operation, computational modeling, simulation methods, and circuit applications of nanoscale devices. In this book, both qualitative and quantitative approaches are considered, to analyze and explore the contributions made by various researchers, who are actively engaged in nanoscale device research. Our main motivation has been the challenges of analyzing and exploring the electrical behaviors of contemporary nanoscale device technologies. The purpose of this book is to provide a desirable balance, between the basic background and concepts for recent device technologies employed, to improve the device performance. The book purposefully builds the principles of nano electronic devices gradually invigorating those of micro electronic devices. The book briefly covers solid-state physics, quantum mechanics, basics of electron transport, p-n junction, followed by the operation of MOS capacitors, to develop a solid foundation of basic concepts, which is very important for understanding of recent technologies. A separate chapter, having calibrated a simulation framework with guidance on commercially popular Sentauras and Silvaco TCAD software, enables researchers and students to investigate and develop new structures of nanoscale devices, for improved performance. A separate chapter has been provided, on photonic integrated circuits, to clarify the importance of the integration of optics with electronics. The book provides valuable resource material for researchers, graduate students, and senior undergraduate students, in electrical and electronics engineering, who are interested in exploring nanoscale devices. This is an important reference source for materials scientists and engineers looking to increase their understanding of nanoscale electronics and devices. Addresses the conceptual, architectural, and design challenges faced by emerging nanoscale devices as a replacement of conventional MOSFET Serves as a guide to researchers by suggesting research directions and potential applications Explains the use of Technology Computer-Aided Design software (TCAD), to produce numerical simulations of nanoscale devices
