Teresa Carpenter, a true diary enthusiast, scoured the archives of libraries, historical societies, and private estates to assemble an almost holographic view of New York City from the early 1600s to the present day. These entries are arranged by date--January 1 through December 31--but are selected from more than three centuries of writing by those living in, or visiting, Manhattan. Thus the entry for February 8 will have an excerpt from, for example, George Washington in the eighteenth century, George Templeton Strong in the nineteenth century, Andy Warhol in the twentieth, and a blogger from the twenty-first. In the process, readers get a wonderful glimpse of life in this city through the ages.
