Die Systematik als älteste biologische Disziplin ist auch heute noch grundlegend für die moderne Evolutionsbiologie, insbesondere für Biodiversitätsforschung und Ökologie. Die von Willi Hennig entwickelte Theorie der phylogenetischen Systematik gilt derzeit als der fundierteste Ansatz zur Rekonstruktion der Stammesgeschichte und zur intersubjektiven Systematisierung der Organismen.
