Saladin is perhaps the only Muslim ruler who emerges with any clarity in standard tales and histories of the Crusades. This is a translation of Baha al-Din Ibn Shaddad's 12th-century account of his life and career. Ibn Shaddad was an admirer and close associate of Saladin, serving as his qadi al-'askar (judge of the army) until Saladin's death in 1193. His position and access to information make this text an authoritative resource for Saldin's career, while his personal relationship with the Sultan adds insight into the account of his final years. This translation takes into account the author's readings of the earliest manuscript of the work, dated 1228.
