Book synopsis
Women are popularly portrayed in the media and in§academic literature as being dissatisfied with their§bodies. This has created an environment where women s§bodies have been framed as ''problematic''. This book§examines the discourse of the problem body and the§ways in which women come to interpret and understand§this discourse over the course of their lives.§Life-history interviews were conducted with 20 women§between the ages of 20 and 60 with the aim of§developing the already existing research and data on§this topic. The themes that emerged from the§narratives of the 20 women include an array of§experiences; stories of childhood teasing, dieting,§media perceptions, pregnancy and motherhood, life§changing moments and personal stories on aging. This§book sheds further light on the complexities of§women''s bodily perceptions, particularly changes and§consistencies over the life course and would be of§interest to anyone looking to explore the area of§body image and perceptions.
