Kritisch analysiert das Buch Schillers Moralästhetik als vermeintlich moderatere Alternative zur Pflichtethik Kants. In Abkehr von gängigen Forschungsthesen wird gezeigt, dass die Einwände von Schiller, aber auch Schopenhauer und Nietzsche gegen Kant auf Fehlurteilen beruhen und dass Schillers eigener Entwurf sogar einen Moralrigorismus wider Willen impliziert. Zudem enthält Schillers Konzeption von 'Anmut' und 'Würde' Inkonsequenzen, deren Ursache eruiert wird. Über die problemorientierten systematischen Analysen hinaus macht eine kulturhistorische Horizontbildung evident, wie sehr Schiller und Hölderlin durch das antike Ideal einer 'Kalokagathia' und 'Sympatheia' geprägt sind, das sich von der Philosophie Kants aber fundamental unterscheidet.
