Book synopsis

A geosynchronous Satellite is a Satellite whose orbit on the Earth repeats regularly over points on the Earth over time. A geostationary communications Satellite drifts gradually out of its correct orbital position under a variety of influences, notably solar winds and the irregular distribution of gravities of Moon and Earth. Thus its orbital position must be corrected from time to time to ensure proper communications and to avoid interference with other Satellites' signals. This has to be done taking into account the limited on-board fuel and the need for accurate positioning of the Satellite in the increasingly overcrowded geostationary orbit. The study proposed a robust optimal eigenvector assignment sliding mode control scheme for efficient orbital positioning of Satellites. A mathematical model of a geostationary Satellite was derived using the Lagrangian method. A state feedback control law was applied to the linearized and normalised system model to produce three decoupled second order subsystems. An optimal linear quadratic regulator was designed foreach subsystem. The optimal closed loop system poles were determined along with the optimal closed loop eigenvectors. The clo
