Santiago de Compostela, Endstation und Ziel des selbst zum Mythos gewordenen Jakobswegs, ist ein bedeutendes kulturelles Zentrum Spaniens. Seit Jahrhunderten führt der Weg Pilger aus ganz Europa an die Atlantikküste und zur Kathedrale der Stadt, die dem Apostel Jakobus gewidmet ist. Candida Höfer (geb. 1944) wurde eingeladen, die berühmten Bibliotheken der Stadt zu photographieren. Ende Oktober, wenn nun das große neue Kulturzentrum "City of Culture of Galicia", das der amerikanische Architekt Peter Eisenman entworfen und gebaut hat, eingeweiht wird, soll das Ereignis mit einer großen Candida Höfer- Ausstellung gefeiert werden, zu der unser Buch als Begleitpublikation erscheint. Fokus der Ausstellung sind Candida Höfers Aufnahmen von Bibliotheken aus den letzten Jahre, die aus Santiago de Compostela eingeschlossen. Die beiden Essays im Buch stammen von dem renommierten katalanischen Schriftsteller Enrique Vila-Matas und dem deutschen Rechtsgelehrten Herbert Burkert.
