Marla, a 27-year old good girl, is shattered by divorce. Restarting her life with no visible skills is hindered by the beautiful, envious, lost girl Carol; the unscrupulous, money-chasing, promiscuous drug addict, bad girl Linda; and devious, evil Xiůmei, a 35-year old, unattractive Chinese immigrant who chooses to turn her life around through greed and crime Marla has given up a career for the love of an actor. His immorality takes Marla from lavish wedding to disastrous divorce. Struggling to reach the high road of life she rises out of potential self-destruction, searches for a positive world and even finds a chance for new love. Linda, a trashy young actress bad-girl, calculatingly hooks onto a successful television writer, Michael. Divorced, naďve, and unfamiliar with life's decadent delights, he falls for Linda's games, impregnates her, and by marrying her he forfeits his budding romance with Marla. A drug addict, Linda can only be saved by Michael's steadfast loving support. Carol, a beauty all her life, now nearing 40 is lost; right or wrong have no meaning for her. She and Marla hit it off, but Carol envies Marla's natural talents and straightforward attitude. She runs hot and cold toward Marla and when Marla loses Michael, Carol easily switches her allegiance and wanting to spite Marla, she grabs onto Buzz, another Hollywood professional man. Xiůmei is a devious, evil Chinese girl who marries an American to get out of China. Driven by greed, she deals drugs, nearly kills her American cocaine-dependent husband and murders her business partner, before she meets her own just deserts. Her covert actions under the guise of "eager immigrant" bring out Marla's innate ability to sense impending danger. Making her own choices Marla overcomes obstacles, finds her own voice, stands on her own feet and is able to accept the possibility of the new love of Sebastian. Sex, greed, crime and yes, love, drive this fast moving wild ride to its satisfying ending.
