Book synopsis
International migration has become an increasingly§salient feature of the contemporary world, as more§than 200 million people -- a figure equivalent to the§sixth most populous country in the world -- now live§outside of their country of birth. Yet much of what§we know about international migration is based upon§individual-level ethnographies or country-specific§studies, limiting our understanding of the§macro-structural, or global, characteristics of§international migration. In this timely work,§Matthew Sanderson provides a comprehensive and§systematic treatment of international migration that§spans the less-developed world in the late twentieth§century. He draws upon an interdisciplinary§theoretical framework and employs a multi-methods§approach that combines quantitative, cross-national§analyses with case studies of countries. The§findings from the analyses demonstrate that§international migration is both an important cause§and consequence of global social change. §Globalization and Migration offers a novel§perspective that challenges our contemporary§understanding of why people move and how these§movements affect receiving countries in the§less-developed world.
