Book synopsis
From 1939 to 1945 the armoured divisions of the German Army (Heer) were a formidable war machine. this machine began to be built up in the aftermath of the First World War, and it was thanks to the persistence and inventiveness of a group of officers (amongst whom were the future Generals Lutz and Guderian) that coming to power in 1933, Hitler found the basis he needed for building up an armoured force worthy of the name. This book documents the Panzer tank troops (Panzertruppen) and to the thirty or more elite Panzer divisions that came into being between 1939 and 1945. It features detailed biographies and unpublished portraits of the 266 general officers or higher who commanded Hitler's tank armies, army corps and divisions during that period. Part Two of the book provides the composition and history of the tank divisions, illustrated with over 300 mostly unpublished photographs featuring the different Panzer divisions on all fronts, at all stages of the War.
