Among the many accomplishments in art and literature by Rodolphe Topffer (1799-1846), his invention of the comic strip stands out as the most surprising, curious, and - after 100 years of being inundated by comic strips - by far the most significant. This is the first English-language collection of Topffer's oeuvre - which includes all eight of his full-length stories, plus previously unpublished fragments of unfinished stories and manuscript segments omitted in the original printed versions. Noted comics scholar David Kunzle translates the captions, provides a detailed biography and chronology, as well as dealing with the questions of dating and the differences between various editions of his work.
