This book makes an unprecedented contribution to the debate over the fate of slaves in ancient times and thus clarifies the meaning of freedom in the medieval Mediterranean world.Byzantium is the focus of this study, not just because it followed in the footsteps of Rome but also because it was the setting of major historic changes, including the advent of Islam. In ancient times, the practice of slavery did not decline there, nor was it replaced ; it continued to evolve in accordance with the prevailing political, social, cultural and religious environment. The author objects to the tendency to define slavery as a primarily economic phenomenon and shows that non-freedom and freedom have less to do with civil status than with social relationships.
