It is the story of Albertine, a poor unmarried seamstress, living in Norway's capital, Christiania. It is about her hopes and dreams, her relationship with a police officer and how she eventually falls to prostitution. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
