In jüngster Zeit wurden zwar einige Modernisierungen in Angriff genommen, dennoch hat die jahrhundertelange relative Abgeschiedenheit Burma in architektonischer Hinsicht zu einem Zeitfenster in die Vergangenheit werden lassen: Prachtvolle Tempel, stattliche Kolonialgebäude und eine Vielzahl kleinerer Bauten in den zahllosen Fischerdörfern und Landgemeinden gewähren Einblick in eine abwechslungsreiche, häufig unruhige Geschichte. Man könnte sogar sagen, dass sich die dynastischen Streitigkeiten in dieser turbulenten Region vielleicht am besten anhand der Architektur nachzeichnen und verstehen lassen. So führte die Eskalation von Streitigkeiten über die Thronfolge häufig dazu, dass der neue Herrscher ganze Paläste und Gebäude zusammenpacken und per Elefant abtransportieren ließ, um einen neuen Regierungssitz oder eine Hauptstadt zu errichten. Die Überbleibsel der alten Städte überließ man dann zumeist einfach den Unbilden der Natur.The architecture in Burma represents a mixture of the county s history, politics, natural assets, religion and superstition. Despite inevitably some recent avowals towards modernization, centuries of relative seclusion have allowed this country to remain something of an historical timeline in architectural terms. Burma s resplendent temples, stately colonial edifices and the myriad of structures that comprise innumerable fishing and country villages and provide an architectural window towards the country s varied and oftentimes tumultuous history. The turbulence of the region, punctuated by dynastic squabbles is perhaps oftentimes best chronicled and understood via its architecture. The escalation of successional quarrels oftentimes would result in the new ruler packing up palaces and other structures and hauling these by elephant to establish a new seat or capital. The remnants of the old cities often left to the vicissitudes of nature.
