Book synopsis

This book will be an exposé of the how different neurodegenerative diseases may influence and/or relate to the artistic process, with a particular focus on visual art and painting. The focus is more on how the neurological aspects of the disease may impact artistic expression; from Parkinson's, to Alzheimers and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), to Stroke. Each chapter reviews different diseases that are of broad interest in the neurology community and its effect on artistic expression.  The origins of this topic stem from a public lecture the volume editor prepared for the Massachusetts College of Art about the intersection of Parkinson's disease and creativity in famous artists.  There is significant academic interest in the field of art and neurological disease, and that considering how artistic expression may be modified by alterations in neural circuits due to disease is actually a rich territory from which to understand the disease itself. Moreover, engagement in creative acts has been linked to therapeutic benefit in multiple neurodegenerative processes, and there are ideas about how this time of stimulation may promote certain types of neuroplasticity.
