Microbial Fermentation of Biowastes summarizes the latest research advances on development of various strategies for enhanced microbial fermentation for organic waste conversion to bioenergy/biochemicals and for biodegradation of plastic waste. Beginning with an overall introduction on enhancing strategies for microbial fermentation processes in Chapter 1, particular focus is set on technical principles of additive strategies, multi-stage bioreactors, microbial bioaugmentation strategies, genetically engineered microorganisms, co-digestion strategies, feedstock pre-treatment strategies, enzyme technologies, and hybrid technologies methods. Following in Chapters 2-6 are the reviews on progress in conversion of several common wastes (i.e. food waste, agricultural waste, manure, wastewater, and algal residues) to bioenergy and biochemicals via enhanced anaerobic digestion. Regarding various performance-enhancing strategies, Chapters 7-14 summarize the significant progress achieved on enhancing anaerobic digestion via additive strategy, multi-stage bioreactor strategy, microbial bioaugmentation strategy, genetic engineering approach, co-digestion strategy, feedstock pre-treatment strategy, enzyme applications, and hybrid technologies. For resource recovery from biowastes, Chapter 15 provides the recent advances on enhanced acidogenic fermentation of organic wastes for production of volatile fatty acids, while Chapter 16 summarizes functional microbial characteristics in acidogenic fermenters of organic wastes for production of volatile fatty acids. Finally, for plastic biodegradation development, Chapter 17 reviews the recent advances on microbial fermentation for biodegradation of plastics and microplastic in bioreactors, which would provide a hint for more efficient of biodegradation of plastics via microbial functions.
