Crieff, the Capital of Strathearn, lies in the heart of picturesque Perthshire. Located on the southern slopes of the rugged Grampians, its leafy lanes and tranquil riverside walkways conceal much of its turbulent past. Once the centre of the Pictish Kingdom of Fortren and the locus of the oldest Roman frontier in Europe, the town hosted the annual Michaelmas cattle Tryst in the eighteenth century. Rob Roy Macgregor was a regular visitor to the town and Bonnie Prince Charlie himself held his final council of war here before that fateful encounter at Culloden. It was one of the villages of Strathearn burnt by the Jacobites in the aftermath of the 1715 Uprising and was rebuilt to become a prosperous weaving town in the period up until the mid nineteenth century. This book uses old and new photographs to show how Crieff has changed over time.
