Anotácia knihy

The cross-current between word structure and other aspects of grammar constitutes the basic focus of this study. The data used are primarily from Efik. English and some other languages like Ibibio, and Igbo, which are also studied for cross reference purposes. The introductory part of the book deals with some basic terms and concepts in morphology and syntax. We undertake an investigation of Efik words and word formation processes, covering inflectional and derivational phenomena as well as syntactic processes they can signal in the language. The book also examines the interaction of word structure with phonology and the phonological processes they can signal. We have attempted to characterise the nature of word formation rules and the way in which they fit into the model of speakers' competence, and how they interact with syntactic rules and knowledge.
