The ever-increasing reliance of society on computersystems has led to a need for highly reliablesystems. There are a number of areas where computersystems perform critical functions and thedevelopment of such systems requires a higher levelof attention than any other type of system. Theappropriate approach in this situation is known asformal methods. Formal methods refer to the use ofmathematical techniques for the specification,development and verification of software and hardwaresystems. The two main goals of this book are: (1) thedesign of mathematical models as a basis for theimplementation of error-free software for the safetyinterlock system at iThemba LABS and (2) thecomparison of formal method techniques that addressesthe lack of much-needed empirical studies in thefield of formal methods.
