Gothic tribes played a major role in the destruction of the Western half of the Roman Empire between 350 and 500 AD, establishing successor states in southern France and Spain. Using contemporary sources, this study challenges the traditional view that Goths entered the Roman Empire already established as a coherent group. Instead, the author shows that the Visigoths and Ostrogoths were large new social groupings, struggling to survive the upheavals of the Migration Period. The study explores the complicated interactions with Roman power which prompted the creation of the Visigoths and Ostrogoths around newly emergent dynasties and helped to bring the fall of the Roman Empire.
