This book aims to position blockbuster-era foreign directors within a wider historical context of 'émigré' talent in Hollywood. As Hollywood becomes global, the existing paradigms that rely on emigration, whether for political or economic reasons, no longer function. Current flows of talent in cinema develop in a pattern parallel to those in other fields involving human capital. In the last few decades, Hollywood studios have become a part of larger global conglomerates, which have interests not only in other media but also in electronics and other industries. A new way of looking at the 'global director' is through the lens of transnational structures Hollywood studios have become a part of. Hollywood has always been international; nevertheless, its current transnationality extends to ownership, production (including pre- and post-), distribution, exhibition and reception. Within this global network, filmmakers are more analogous to mobile human capital employed by transnational corporations than they are to 'émigré' directors of the earlier decades.
