This is an imaginative work of literary criticism. Thirteen scholars, two of them famous poets, have selected a wide variety of Joseph Brodsky's poems written between 1970 and 1994 for detailed discussion in the context of his whole output. The choice of poems reflects Brodsky's diversity of themes - time, faith, death, love, creativity, language, Russia and alienation - as well as his devices: the use of metre and rhymes, stanza form, syntax and vocabulary, conceits and tropes. Together these thirteen essays offer a perspective on one of the most original and profound modern poets, who is sometimes philosophical, sometimes humorous, but always demanding and often provocative. This collection should fulfil the often expressed need for a comprehensive approach to the study of Brodsky's poetry, which is linguistically as well as intellectually challenging. It will help students to gain the confidence they need to study modern poetry, to assess the way in which poetic technique shapes a poet's ideas.
