Anotácia knihy

The term doxa in Ancient Greek has two meanings: one of appearance − what objectively appears to me, and one of opinion – what subjectively seems to me to be the case. In his dialogues, Plato opposes and contrasts doxa, an opinion formed from various sources, notably popular culture and sophistic teachings – with logos (reason). This first opposition contains the root of another philosophic and decisive one in Plato’s theories between doxa and science (episteme), the various aspects of which the author examines in two dialogues written by Plato in his youth, Meno and Gorgias, in the principal dialogue of Plato’s adulthood, the Republic, and in two dialogues of his late writing period, the Theaetetus and the Sophist. Such analyses underscore Yvon Lafrance’s two outstanding qualities as an interpreter: integrity and benevolence. In accounting for the evolving nature of Plato’s thought, of which he points out the literary and pre-Socratic background, the author places all of the passages studied back in their proper context while making use of all contemporary research findings on the subject. That is why this book includes one hundred or so more pages than the original work. Yvon Lafrance cites and comments on the key studies published (in at least five languages) on the subject from 1975 to 2003. In a postscript, he takes a stand on the latest trends in the interpretation of the dialogues. For his part, Luc Brisson rounds out this work by proposing a bibliographical supplement dating from 2003 to 2013, and a postscript detailing the interpretative approach adopted by Yvon Lafrance. This new edition may therefore be considered an original contribution.
