Anotácia knihy

This study is devoted to the now-lost way of perceiving the form of writing and power which prevailed in the Jiankang Court in southern China between the 5th and 6th centuries. Its aim is to show that, in this scholarly world, knowledge of writing – wen – was defined by institutions and discourses which did not distinguish between the “literary” and “politics”; that such knowledge, like the discourses and institutions governing them, was not exempt from this court society’s specific conflicts; and that any discourse on letters – even the most obviously “literary” – was also a discourse on imperial power, since the latter (conceived as a form of virtue), sought in the realm of letters worthy “ornaments” to display its moral superiority. Perhaps the modern distinction between “literature” and “politics” would have never existed without these scholarly circles in which letters were the prerogative of a virtuous ruler. Knowledge of letters had to become recognised as politically symbolic before “literature” could be revered as an art form worthy in its own right.
