Book synopsis

Luminescent ceramics have become attractive candidates for the development of modern light sources. These ceramics can be used in LEDs; displays, and scintillators. Luminescent ceramics can be classified depending on their functionalities. Phosphors are used in a variety of display applications, such as electroluminescent, photoluminescent, plasma and field emission displays, LCDs, cathode ray tubes (CRTs), X-ray detectors, and LEDs. Phosphors can also be used for security. Phosphors are separated into two types. In the first type, the phosphor is charged up by daylight or ultraviolet light storage and then exposure to infrared will cause the stored energy to be released as visible light. In the second, the up conversion of the infrared to visible light is performed by anti-Stokes phosphors. This new class of advanced functional materials finds diverse applications in strategic lasers. For example, transparent Ce, Sm: TAG luminescent ceramics are used for high power blue laser, driven lightning and display technologies. In addition, luminescent ceramics are applied for dosimetry. Luminescent Ceramics: Fundamentals, Properties, Processing and Applications provides a detailed review of luminescent ceramic materials for lighting, dosimetry and security. The chapters cover oxide, nitride and fluoride phosphors; garnet transparent ceramics; oxynitride and BeO ceramics; doped MgO nanophosphors and doped MgAl2O4 ceramics for dosimetry and novel thermo-luminescent ceramics for a light emitting devices and security applications. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the unique possibilities offered by ceramic materials in the field of light emission and applications. It will be an essential reference resource for any ceramist working in the area of luminescent materials. Provides an extensive overview of recent research progress on luminescent ceramic materials and their application in lighting, display, dosimetry and ceramic lasers Covers fundamentals, synthesis, characterization, properties, production, processing and applications Gives for each energy technology a list of requirements for the materials used Provides an evaluation and comparison of the choice of materials available, including structure/properties/performance Identifies gaps/potential for improvement in the field of luminescent ceramics
