He commenced his working life as an apprentice. A commitment of five years that enabled learning a trade that eventually opened the door to other roles.

He was a witness to the modernisation of the Victorian Railways from the era of a family styled bureaucracy to a privatised entity. With or without a ticket it was quite a ride.
