Most high school students do not struggle with physics because the textbook is bad. They struggle because they have not solved enough problems with feedback. Practice to Mastery: U.S. High School Physics is built on the premise that real mastery requires hundreds of carefully designed problems paired with explanations that teach, not just label the correct letter.
This workbook contains approximately 3,150 problems organized into 24 self-contained chapters that follow the standard U.S. high school physics curriculum. The chapter sequence begins with conventions, units, vectors, and one- and two-dimensional kinematics; works through dynamics, circular motion, energy, momentum, and Newtonian gravity; then covers the full electricity-and-magnetism block, simple harmonic motion, mechanical and electromagnetic waves, geometric and physical optics, thermal physics and thermodynamics; and closes with modern physics, special relativity, rotational dynamics, fluids, and a final chapter on measurement and experimental skills.
Every chapter opens with a clear "Topics Covered" list so students know exactly what concepts will be exercised, and then offers six progressive sections:
Multiple Choice (Section A) - the largest section, where students build raw fluency on a single concept at a time.
Multiple Select (Section B) - rewards careful reading and forces complete concept coverage rather than a lucky guess.
Data and Diagram Interpretation (Section C) - graphs, experimental scenarios, and physical diagrams to be reasoned about quantitatively.
Short Answer / Free Response (Section D) - a mix of conceptual derivations and multi-step numerical calculation problems, each requiring the student to show the chain of reasoning: principle, equation, substitution, result, and unit check.
Application and Scenario (Section E) - realistic situations (a moving vehicle, a laboratory measurement, an engineering design choice) where chapter concepts must be combined.
Passage-Based Questions (Section F) - short physics passages followed by several multiple-choice questions, building the kind of close reading and concept transfer required for serious physics exams.
All Answer Keys and Detailed Explanations are collected at the back of the book in their own section, organized chapter by chapter - exactly the structure that allows a student to score themselves first and then learn from the result. Explanations are written in complete sentences, identify the principle being applied, and show the substitution and arithmetic step by step. Every item is tagged EASY, MEDIUM, or HARD, so students can prioritize their review and recognize genuine progress.
Who this book is for
Students working through a high school physics course who need more daily repetition than their class provides.
Self-studiers preparing for a comprehensive final exam or working through physics for the first time outside a classroom.
Teachers and tutors looking for a deep, organized problem bank with explanations they can hand a student without rewriting from scratch.
Parents who want to give a curious teenager a structured, rigorous physics workout that is more than a worksheet packet.
