Dentists decisions result in considerable variationin treatment practices which may associate withdifferences in the appropriateness of care. A widerange of factors may govern dentist s treatmentphilosophy beyond just biological and technicalfactors such as probability of disease, clinicalbenefits, risks and costs to the patient, economicbenefit to the dentist, and impact on the dentist sself-image. Deeper understanding of these factors isnecessary in order to improve the quality of oralhealth care. Although substantial resources areallocated to clinical research, the implementation ofresearch evidence in clinical care has not receivedmuch attention. Dentists are expected to update theirknowledge regarding the best care options. They havealso an ethical responsibility for transferring thisknowledge to the public. This book, therefore, focuses on the underlying determinants of apreventive orientation among dentists and theirperceived barriers to the provision of preventivedental care. The analyses and findings should beespecially useful to researchers in the field of oralpublic health, health policy makers, and all dentists.
