Healthcare is shifting toward a holistic, whole person approach in efforts to meet the goals of the Triple Aim: to improve population health, decrease cost of care, and improve patient experiences. To achieve this, the primary care sector is adopting an integrated model of care. This model addresses both biomedical and behavioral health, and includes preventative care, population health management, technology and innovative strategies to increase access to care, and the use of interprofessional teams. With their biomedical and behavioral health training, occupational therapy (OT) is uniquely positioned to add their distinct scope and skill to interprofessional teams to address patient needs in this new healthcare climate. As this is an emerging practice area for occupational therapy, and no current guidelines specific to this site exist, this book will be a first of its kind text for occupational therapists in primary care settings. In primary care specifically, occupational therapists work with patients' habits, roles, and routines that affect health to promote health and improve independent self-management of medical conditions and lifestyles, reducing dependence on costly health care services. This timely and needed clinical manual facilitates the integration of occupational therapy and guides consistent best practice for primary care occupational therapy. It is designed to help occupational therapy practitioners fit into the practice model and quick pace of primary care, which is different from the traditional occupational therapy practice model. In more traditional occupational therapy settings, interventions are provided in longer sessions, and are focused on rehabilitation for specific acute conditions. In primary care, visits are brief, and address patient needs in the context of their presenting issue. No other published guide meets the unique needs of this emerging practice area. The book begins with a brief overview of general occupational therapy practice in primary care settings and continues on to describe administrative topics. The largest section of this book focuses on specific health conditions most likely to be encountered by a primary care occupational therapy practitioner. Written by experts in the field, Primary Care Occupational Therapy is the definitive resource for all primary care practitioners or those interested in lifestyle-based interventions for conditions frequently seen in primary care contexts. It is also a useful guide for behavioral health care providers and administrators of general medical practices.
